What Can You Eat After Tooth Extraction?

2 min read

Your mouth’s going to feel weird after this, numb, sore, maybe both. Food still matters though, just keep it easy on the extraction site for now.

First day, soft and cool or lukewarm, nothing that needs real chewing.

Day One

Yogurt’s easy. Applesauce too. Mashed banana if you’re hungry but not up for much effort. Mashed potatoes once they’ve cooled down work well too.

Soup’s fine, just not piping hot, warm’s enough. A smoothie’s good but drink it from a cup or spoon, skip the straw, the suction can mess with the healing clot. Scrambled eggs are soft and actually satisfying once you want something more.

Don’t assume cold’s automatically better either. If cold makes your teeth ache, let food sit a few minutes first.

After The First Day

By day two or three you can usually add stuff needing a bit more chewing, soft pasta’s a good next step. Rice too, though tiny grains love hiding where you don’t want them.

Go slow with texture. Something hurts to chew, stop.

What To Skip For Now

Hard or crunchy food scrapes the area. Sticky food clings around it. Spicy food stings while things are still tender. Seeds and small bits can settle near the extraction site too, and popcorn’s a hard no for now, one stubborn kernel finds the wrong spot every time.

Skip alcohol while healing too, especially on medication.

A Few Habits That Help

Eat slowly, small bites, chew on the other side when you can. No straw until your dentist says it’s fine, that suction pulls on the clot you actually need for healing. Don’t rinse hard after every bite either, first day it’s best to just leave the area alone.

Getting Back To Normal Eating

No rush here. Some people want solid food fast, others stick to soft meals for a few days because chewing near the site just feels off.

Start with what’s easy, try something firmer once that feels fine. If chewing makes it throb, back off.

Severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or swelling that keeps getting worse, that’s not a food problem, call your dentist.
