Can You Get Rid of Gum Disease?

3 min read

Yes, with a catch. Early gum disease can often be reversed with better care and a professional cleaning. Once it’s turned into periodontitis though, the goal shifts. You can stop it from getting worse, but bone and gum already lost don’t grow back.

Sounds grim. Isn’t really. Gum disease is common, and treatment works best caught early.

What Gum Disease Actually Does

Plaque builds up around your teeth, bacteria in it irritate the gums. They get red, swollen, bleed when you brush. That’s gingivitis, and you’ve got a real shot at reversing it here.

Ignored long enough, infection moves deeper, pockets form between gums and teeth, and the supporting bone gets damaged over time. That’s periodontitis, needs actual treatment, not just a better toothbrush.

Bleeding Isn’t Something To Ignore

People assume it’s just brushing too hard sometimes. But regular bleeding deserves attention regardless. And your mouth can feel totally fine while gum disease progresses, no dramatic pain forcing you to deal with it.

Can Gingivitis Go Away

Often, yes. Caught early, removing plaque and improving your care lets gums heal. A dentist clears hardened plaque you can’t brush away, then you keep it up at home.

Trick’s consistency, not perfection. Flossing matters since a brush can’t reach every space plaque hides in. Twice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste is basic but skip it and plaque builds fast. Don’t scrub harder either, that won’t fix it, gentle along the gumline works better.

What If It’s Already Periodontitis

Usually can’t fully reverse this since the tissue and bone may already be damaged. But treatment slows or stops it progressing. Might need a deeper cleaning below the gumline, sometimes further treatment depending on the damage.

Doesn’t mean you’re destined to lose your teeth though.

What Treatment Actually Feels Like

First few days can feel strange, gums tender, bleeding maybe even more noticeable at first cleaning spots you’d been avoiding. Keep going unless your dentist says otherwise. Professional cleaning’s worth it, don’t try scraping plaque off yourself.

When To See A Dentist

Gums regularly bleeding, swollen, sore, or pulling away from your teeth, book an appointment. Bad breath that keeps returning’s a clue too. Loose teeth or changes in your bite are more concerning, don’t wait for pain.

Already being treated? Keep the follow-ups even when things feel better, feeling fine doesn’t always mean it’s gone.

The Part You Control

Treatment gets you part way. Your routine keeps it going. Brush gently, clean between teeth daily, follow your dentist’s schedule, quit smoking if that applies. Caught early, you can often reverse it. Further along, you can still get it under control.
