Most people don’t think about a filling until they’re sitting in the dentist’s chair and someone says you need one.
Different materials do different jobs
• Composite resin. This is the tooth colored one, and most people like it because it blends in so well that you stop noticing it after a while.
• Silver colored fillings are called dental amalgam. They’ve been around for a long time, and plenty of older fillings are still doing their job years later.
• Gold exists too, though you don’t see it as often now. I still think it has a certain old school charm, even if most people would rather keep dental work invisible.
• Glass ionomer releases fluoride over time, which gives nearby tooth enamel a little extra support, especially in spots that are harder to keep perfectly clean.
So what’s inside them?
Composite fillings are made from plastic resin mixed with tiny bits of glass or ceramic. Those small particles make the material much stronger than plain plastic would ever be. The dentist shapes it carefully and then hardens it with a special blue light.
