Tooth fillers, usually called dental fillings, fix spots where a tooth has been damaged by decay or a small crack. The dentist removes the weak part of the tooth, then fills the space with a strong material so the tooth can do its job again.
What actually goes into a filling?
• Tooth colored composite. It blends in well, which matters more than people admit.
• Silver amalgam has been around for years, and plenty of older fillings are still holding up just fine.
• Gold exists too, though I think most people skip it because the price climbs fast, and the look isn’t for everyone.
• Ceramic feels like the premium choice if you want something that matches your tooth really closely.
Does getting one hurt?
Most people expect the drilling to be the worst part. It usually isn’t. The area is numbed first, so you mostly notice pressure or a strange vibration.
How long do fillings last?
Quite a while, if you take care of your teeth. Brushing matters. Regular checkups matter too. Grinding your teeth every night is a different story because that extra force wears things down faster.
Knowing when it’s time
A cavity doesn’t always announce itself with sharp pain. Sometimes it’s just a rough spot that catches your tongue. Sometimes cold water suddenly feels wrong.
