What Happens During the Operation
Before anything starts, your dentist or oral surgeon checks the tooth with an X-ray. They need to see its position and how close the roots are to nearby structures. That part matters, especially with a lower wisdom tooth.
Getting the Tooth Out
• Local anaesthetic first, so the area is properly numb before anything else happens.
• A little pressure is normal, and honestly, that’s often the strangest part of the whole appointment.
• For an impacted tooth, the gum may need a small opening. Nothing dramatic, just a more involved route to reach the tooth.
What Recovery Feels Like
The numbness wears off after a few hours. Then you may notice soreness and some swelling around the jaw, particularly during the first couple of days. Ice packs can make things more comfortable, and your dentist will explain what pain relief is suitable for you.
The First Few Days
Keep the area clean, but don’t aggressively brush around the extraction site. Your dentist may give you specific instructions about rinsing and cleaning. Follow those rather than trying some random internet trick.
When Wisdom Tooth Removal Makes Sense
Removing a wisdom tooth is worth considering when it’s causing repeated pain, infection, damage to a nearby tooth, or other ongoing problems. I think waiting for constant trouble is usually a bad strategy when a dentist has already found a clear reason for removal.
After the Operation
Give yourself some breathing room for the first day. Rest. Follow the aftercare instructions. Don’t poke the extraction site because you’re curious about how it’s healing.
