How to Relieve Tooth Pain

2 min read

Start with the thing that gives you a little breathing room

Tooth pain has a way of taking over everything. You try to answer a text. You chew on one side. Then you realize you’ve been thinking about that tooth for the last hour. The good news is you don’t have to sit there hoping it fades on its own.

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Swish it around for about half a minute and spit it out. Sometimes a bit of food is stuck where it shouldn’t be, and this clears the area enough that the pain eases.

Pain relief that actually makes sense

If you normally take over the counter pain medicine safely, use it as directed on the label. Don’t crush a tablet and press it against the gum. People still pass that tip around, and it can irritate the tissue without fixing the real problem.

• Warm salt water first, because it takes almost no effort and sometimes the small stuff really is the problem.

• A cold pack belongs on your cheek, not inside your mouth. It sounds obvious once you’ve tried both.

• Pain medicine has its place, though following the label matters more than guessing your own dose.

Pay attention to what makes it flare up

Because a cracked tooth reacts differently from an irritated gum, notice what changes the pain. Hot drinks bothering you tells a different story than sharp pain when you bite down. You don’t need to solve the mystery. Just notice it.

Don’t keep poking at it

It sounds tempting to keep checking the sore spot with your tongue. Everyone does it for a while. Then the area stays irritated and you never really leave it alone. You stop noticing the habit after a bit, and the tooth usually feels less constantly annoying.

Know when home care stops being enough

Tooth pain is often your mouth asking for attention, not patience. If the pain keeps you awake, if your face is swelling, or if you have a fever, get dental care as soon as you can. Waiting rarely rewards anyone.

• Swelling around your face deserves quick attention, even if the tooth settles down for a few hours.

• That dull ache that hangs around all day. It usually means something needs treatment instead of another home remedy.
