How to Ease Tooth Pain Without Making It Worse?

2 min read

Tooth pain has a way of taking over your whole day. You try to ignore it while working. You chew on the other side. You tell yourself it’ll settle down. Then bedtime arrives and somehow it hurts even more.

Start With the Simple Things

The first thing I’d do is rinse your mouth with warm salt water. It sounds almost too basic. Still, it works surprisingly well because it washes away bits of food and calms irritated tissue around the sore tooth.

A cold pack against the outside of your cheek also makes a real difference if your face feels swollen. Leave it there for about fifteen minutes. Give your skin a break. Then repeat later if the pain comes back.

Don’t Keep Poking the Tooth

People do this all the time. They press on the sore spot with a finger or keep checking it with their tongue. I get the temptation. It almost feels like you’re figuring something out. You’re usually just making it angrier.

• Warm salt water. It takes less than a minute and you’ll probably notice the area feeling calmer afterward.

• If chewing hurts, stick to the other side for now. Your mouth gets a little break and that matters.

• A cold pack on your cheek, not straight on the tooth. It feels odd at first, then the throbbing often eases.

Pain Relief Isn’t the Same as Fixing It

Here’s the thing. An over the counter pain reliever can take the edge off. Follow the directions on the label and don’t assume taking more means faster relief.

Watch for Clues

Pay attention to what changes the pain. Does cold water trigger it? Does it wake you in the middle of the night? Does your cheek look puffy? Those little details tell a dentist a lot faster than saying it just hurts.
