Children usually have twenty milk teeth. Ten are in the jaw and ten are in the lower jaw. Milk teeth are also called baby teeth or primary teeth. Although milk teeth eventually fall out milk teeth do a surprisingly important job first.
When Do Milk Teeth Appear?
A baby is not born with teeth but the first milk tooth usually starts appearing at around six months of age. Some children get milk teeth earlier. Others take their time.
By three years old most children have their full set of twenty milk teeth. The timing is not exactly the same for every child so a months either way is usually not something to worry about.
What Are the Twenty Milk Teeth?
The mouth has a sensible layout. Each side of the jaw has five milk teeth and the lower jaw follows the same pattern.
• Four front milk teeth on top and four below which are the ones children tend to show off when they smile.
• Canine milk teeth sit beside the milk teeth and have a slightly pointed shape making them useful for tearing food.
• Eight molar milk teeth altogether tucked further back where they do the chewing work.
Why Do Milk Teeth Fall Out?
As a child grows the permanent teeth underneath the milk teeth start moving into position. The roots of the baby milk teeth gradually dissolve, which loosens them until one day a milk tooth is wobbling around during dinner.
Then it falls out.
Do All Twenty Milk Teeth Fall Out?
Yes. The twenty primary teeth are eventually replaced by teeth.. Don’t expect the change to happen overnight. Children usually start losing milk teeth around age six. The process continues for several years.
The front milk teeth are generally among the first to go. Back milk teeth stay around longer until the later primary school years.
Why Looking After Milk Teeth Still Matters
It can be tempting to think there’s no point worrying much about a cavity in a baby tooth because the tooth will eventually disappear anyway. I do not agree with that attitude.
A decayed milk tooth can become painful. May affect eating or sleeping. In some cases a dental infection needs treatment. Looking after baby teeth also gets children used to brushing and visiting the dentist before their permanent teeth take over.
• Brushing twice a day is the bit but it is still the habit worth keeping.
• Regular dental checks give the dentist a chance to spot problems before a small cavity turns into a bigger nuisance.
• Fluoride toothpaste matters too although the amount used should match the child’s age and dental guidance.
So How Many Milk Teeth Are There?
The answer is twenty milk teeth in total. Milk teeth are smaller, than adult teeth they do not last forever. They can look almost ridiculously tiny in a toddler’s mouth.
