How Long Does a Teeth Extraction Take?

3 min read

Most simple tooth extraction procedures are surprisingly quick. The actual removal of a tooth often takes around twenty to forty minutes although the full appointment can take longer because the dentist needs time to check the tooth numb the area and make sure everything is settled before you leave.

If you have been picturing a long dental procedure you can probably relax a little. Once the local anaesthetic has fully worked you should not feel pain during the tooth extraction. You may notice pressure. Pushing instead. Strange feeling, yes. Usually manageable.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

The dentist starts by examining the tooth and the surrounding gum. An X-ray may be needed if the dentist needs a view of the tooth or its roots. Then the area is numbed with anaesthetic.

After that the dentist gently loosens the tooth before removing it. A straightforward tooth extraction is often over quickly because the tooth is already easy to access.

Simple Extraction Time

A visible tooth with a root shape usually takes less time to remove. The dentist can access it directly. Carefully loosen it before taking it out.

The tricky part is often waiting for the numbness to work properly. Nobody wants the dentist starting before you are ready. Fair enough.

Surgical Extraction Time

Wisdom teeth or teeth that are broken below the gum can take longer. A surgical tooth extraction may involve making an opening in the gum so the dentist can reach the tooth properly. Sometimes the tooth needs to be divided into sections before removal.

That sounds worse than it usually feels. You are numb throughout the procedure although you may feel movement and pressure.

Why Does One Extraction Take Longer Than Another?

– A tooth that’s already loose which is usually much quicker to remove than one with a firm root.

– Curved or complicated roots. These can make the dentist work carefully even when the tooth looks ordinary from above.

– If the tooth has broken near the gum the appointment may take longer because access becomes more difficult.

– Wisdom teeth, those trapped under the gum tend to need more time and sometimes a surgical approach.

What About Recovery After Extraction?

The tooth extraction itself is one part of the appointment. Once the tooth is out the dentist will check the socket. Place gauze over the area to help control bleeding.

The numbness can last for a hours afterward. You will need to be careful while eating because biting your cheek or tongue is ridiculously easy when you cannot properly feel it.
