How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Pain Last After Removal?

1 min read

Most people expect the pain to disappear the moment a wisdom tooth comes out. It doesn’t. Your mouth has just been through a procedure, so some soreness is completely normal, especially during the first few days.

Why Some Wisdom Tooth Pain Lasts Longer

A difficult extraction puts more stress on the surrounding tissue. That’s one reason surgical wisdom tooth removal usually takes longer to settle than a straightforward extraction.

Your aftercare also matters. Smoking is a particularly bad idea during healing because it raises the risk of a painful condition called dry socket. Ignoring your dentist’s instructions isn’t worth testing your luck here.

A Quick Real-Life Example

Raj had a lower wisdom tooth removed on a Monday. By Wednesday, he was still taking pain medicine and complaining that chewing felt awkward, but by Saturday he realized he’d gone most of the afternoon without noticing the area.

That’s pretty typical. Boring healing is good healing.
