How Long Does Swelling Last After Wisdom Tooth Removal?

1 min read

When Does the Swelling Start?

You might not look very different immediately after the procedure. Then you wake up the next morning and suddenly your cheek feels fuller. That’s common. The body is sending fluid and immune cells to the area as it starts repairing the tissue, so swelling can build during the first couple of days.

Why Day Two or Three Can Look Worse

The peak can feel surprisingly late. You may think you’re getting better because the extraction itself doesn’t hurt as much, only to notice that your cheek looks puffier the following morning. It feels backwards, but the timing is pretty typical.

Cold packs are most useful during the first 24 hours. Use one against the outside of your cheek for short periods, with a cloth between the pack and your skin. Don’t fall asleep with it pressed against your face.
