Local anaesthetic blocks the nerves carrying pain signals, that’s how your dentist can drill or poke around without you feeling any of it. Annoying part is it doesn’t just switch off the second the appointment ends.
Some injections go near bigger nerves, especially for lower teeth. That can leave your lip or tongue numb for hours, since the anaesthetic has to wear off around the whole nerve before feeling comes back properly.
A small filling, numbness usually clears faster. Root canal or extraction takes longer since dentists often go deeper or use more anaesthetic to begin with.
Your body clears it at its own pace too, and some anaesthetics are just built to last longer. Useful mid procedure, less fun when you’re trying to drink water an hour later.
Real risk isn’t the numbness itself, it’s accidentally biting or burning yourself without realising, since you can’t feel it happening properly.
Skip hot drinks for now, easy to burn your mouth before you notice the temperature. Chew slowly if you’re eating, your cheek’s kind of in the way and you won’t feel a hard bite coming. Watch kids extra closely here, they tend to chew on a numb lip without realising. And only take pain medicine as directed, don’t use the numbness as an excuse to take extra.
Most numbness fades within a few hours. If it’s still strong well past when your dentist said it should be, worth calling and asking.
A bit of tingling later in the day isn’t a big deal. Numbness that’s still there the next day is worth mentioning though, especially if the injection was near a nerve. And if you get serious swelling or trouble breathing, that’s different entirely, get urgent help rather than waiting it out.
