How Do You Treat Gum Recession?

2 min read

Gum recession is when the gum pulls back and exposes more of the tooth than it should. Teeth start looking a bit longer, sometimes there’s that sharp zing with cold drinks. Annoying stuff, honestly.

Figuring Out The Cause First

Dentist checks how far the gum’s moved, measures the pockets around your teeth, looks for gum disease signs too.

Brushing too hard is a common one. A stiff brush wears the gumline down over time, especially scrubbing the same spot every single morning. Gum disease is another big cause, inflammation damages the tissue holding everything in place.

What Treatment Actually Looks Like

If aggressive brushing’s the problem, switch to a soft brush, ease up on the pressure. Scrubbing harder was never making things cleaner anyway.

If plaque or tartar’s involved, gum disease treatment comes first, plus a professional cleaning to clear tartar you can’t get at home. If sensitivity’s the annoying part, desensitising toothpaste helps a lot, you stop dreading every cold sip.

For more advanced recession, gum grafting sometimes comes up. Dentist takes tissue and places it over the exposed root, it heals in and covers the area properly. Sounds scarier than it usually feels. Recovery takes some patience, and your dentist will walk you through cleaning it while it heals.

What If It’s Mild

Doesn’t always need surgery. If there’s no real damage and it’s not progressing, sometimes it’s just about protecting the area and keeping an eye on it over time.

The real fix is dealing with the actual cause, not trying random stuff from the internet. Rubbing things on your gums doesn’t rebuild tissue, and rough DIY cleaning usually makes it worse, not better.

Can Receded Gums Be Fixed

Sometimes. Grafting can cover exposed roots and add gum tissue back. Doesn’t always mean it looks exactly like it did years ago though.

If your gums are receding, don’t wait until a tooth’s really sensitive or noticeably longer. Getting it checked early gives your dentist a much better shot at controlling whatever’s causing it.
