Why Wisdom Tooth Surgery Is Needed
A wisdom tooth doesn’t always have enough room to come through properly. Sometimes it stays partly covered by gum. Food gets caught there. The area becomes sore, swollen, or difficult to clean.
What Happens During Surgery
Before anything starts, the area is numbed thoroughly. You’ll be awake during a routine procedure, although sedation is available for people who feel very anxious about dental treatment. The dentist may need to open the gum slightly if the tooth is still covered.
The First Few Days After Surgery
• Swelling is pretty normal, especially during the first couple of days, and it often looks worse before it starts looking better.
• Soft foods are your friend. Nobody needs a heroic attempt at chewing crusty bread on day one.
• Keep the surgical area clean, but follow your dentist’s instructions rather than aggressively brushing directly over it.
• Smoking is a bad idea during healing because it raises the risk of dry socket, which is one complication you really don’t want.
What Recovery Actually Feels Like
Pain and swelling usually improve gradually. The first day can feel awkward because your jaw may be stiff and your mouth feels unfamiliar. Then things start getting easier.
Once it’s done, there’s a strange little feeling of relief. One annoying tooth is finally out of your way. And really, how much longer were you planning to let it boss you around?
