Surgical Wisdom Tooth Extraction

2 min read

Why Does a Wisdom Tooth Need Surgery?

A normal tooth extraction is fairly straightforward because the tooth has already come through the gum. A wisdom tooth can be different. It may be partly covered by gum tissue or trapped against the nearby tooth.

And that’s where surgical extraction comes in. The dentist makes a small opening in the gum to reach the tooth. Sometimes a little bone covering the tooth needs to be removed. The tooth itself may also be divided into smaller sections so it can come out without putting unnecessary pressure on the surrounding area.

Common Reasons for Removal

• An impacted tooth sitting sideways, which isn’t going to magically straighten itself out.

• Repeated gum swelling around a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Annoying, especially when it keeps coming back.

• Pressure against the neighboring molar, with the problem often becoming harder to ignore over time.

What Happens During the Procedure?

You’ll usually be given local anaesthetic, so the area becomes numb before anything starts. You might feel pressure or movement, but sharp pain isn’t what you’re supposed to experience. Tell the dentist if you do feel pain. There’s no prize for staying quiet.

Things Worth Taking Seriously

• Keep the extraction area alone. Poking it with your tongue feels tempting, but it won’t help.

• Soft foods are your friend for a few days, particularly while chewing feels awkward.

• Smoking deserves a hard no during early healing because it raises the risk of developing a painful dry socket.

Surgical wisdom tooth extraction isn’t exactly fun. Nobody needs to pretend it is. But if the tooth is genuinely causing trouble, getting it out can feel surprisingly quick once you’re sitting in the chair.
