Before the Wisdom Tooth Surgery
The appointment starts with an examination. Your dentist looks at the wisdom tooth and checks an X-ray to see its position. A tooth that’s fully visible is usually more straightforward to remove. An impacted tooth, which sits partly or completely under the gum, takes more planning.
Getting You Comfortable
Local anaesthetic is injected around the tooth. There’s a quick sting, then the area gradually goes numb. Your dentist checks this before starting because nobody wants to discover halfway through that you can still feel the tooth.
What Actually Happens During Surgery?
Once you’re numb, the dentist begins removing the tooth. If enough of the tooth is visible, it may be loosened and removed directly. But an impacted wisdom tooth needs a little more work because the dentist may need access through the gum.
• A little pressure is normal, especially when the tooth is being loosened, but sharp pain isn’t something you should simply tolerate.
• If the gum needs to be opened, you won’t feel the cut because the area is thoroughly numb.
• Some teeth come out quickly. Others take longer because their position makes access awkward.
After the Tooth Comes Out
• Swelling usually shows up after surgery rather than immediately, so don’t panic if your cheek feels fine when you first leave.
• Soft food makes those first meals much less annoying, especially while chewing feels awkward.
What Does It Feel Like Afterwards?
Once the numbness fades, soreness is expected. Your jaw may also feel stiff, particularly after a more complicated extraction. Follow the aftercare instructions your dentist gives you, and don’t poke the socket just because you’re curious.
