Before the Tooth Is Removed
Your dentist will first check the wisdom tooth and look at dental X-rays to understand its position. This matters because a tooth that has come through normally is usually simpler to remove than one trapped under the gum.
Getting Numb
The local anaesthetic is probably the part people worry about most. You might feel a quick pinch, followed by some pressure as the area becomes numb. After that, your dentist checks that you can’t feel pain before starting.
During the Removal
The actual removal depends on how the tooth sits. A fully erupted wisdom tooth may be loosened and taken out much like another tooth. If it’s stuck beneath gum or bone, your dentist may need to make a small opening around it and remove it in sections.
Right After Surgery
• A little blood mixed with saliva is normal early on, so don’t panic when the gauze looks worse than expected.
• Swelling usually becomes more noticeable later rather than immediately, which catches some people off guard.
• Soft food is your friend for a bit. Crunchy things are simply not worth the hassle.
• Rest matters, especially during those first few hours when your mouth feels strange and your jaw is tired.
• Take medicines exactly as your dentist directs, because guessing the dose is a terrible time to become adventurous.
The Next Few Days
Pain and swelling usually settle gradually. Your jaw may feel stiff, and chewing can be awkward on that side. Most people find that the mouth starts feeling more normal as the days pass.
