Signs Your Wisdom Tooth May Need Removal
Pain is the obvious one, but it isn’t the only clue. A wisdom tooth that’s partly covered by gum can collect food underneath it, which makes the area harder to keep clean. Then you get swelling. Maybe a bad taste. Sometimes the gum feels sore whenever you chew.
• Repeated pain around the back tooth, especially when it keeps coming back after treatment.
• Swollen or tender gums near the wisdom tooth, with the area becoming awkward to clean.
• A tooth growing at an angle, which can put pressure on the tooth beside it and create a very annoying tight spot.
Don’t Wait for Severe Pain
You don’t need to wait until you’re miserable before getting it checked. In fact, I think that’s one of the worst ways to approach wisdom teeth. A dental checkup can spot a problem while it’s still fairly manageable.
When Removal Isn’t Necessary
Some wisdom teeth are perfectly fine where they are. If one has fully come through, sits in a useful position, and can be cleaned properly, a dentist may recommend leaving it alone.
Timing Matters Too
If removal is recommended, don’t put it off for years simply because the tooth isn’t hurting today. Problems often become obvious only after they’ve started.
And when a wisdom tooth is already causing repeated infection, damage, or significant discomfort, getting it assessed sooner is usually the smarter move. You don’t want to keep scheduling your life around a tooth that’s clearly trying to get in the way.
So, When Should You Remove It?
There isn’t one perfect age or one universal deadline. The right time depends on how the tooth is positioned and what’s happening around it.
