One Side Wisdom Tooth Removal

2 min read

Why Remove Just One Wisdom Tooth?

Sometimes, one wisdom tooth simply doesn’t have enough room to come through properly. It may press against the tooth in front of it or become partly trapped under the gum. That little pocket can collect food and become difficult to clean.

What the Dentist Looks For

• A tooth that’s tilted or stuck under the gum, which is usually harder to clean properly.

• If the surrounding gum keeps becoming sore, that’s a pretty good sign the tooth deserves attention.

• Nerve position matters too, especially with a lower wisdom tooth, because the roots can sit close to important nerves.

What Happens During One-Side Removal?

The area is numbed first, so you shouldn’t feel sharp pain during the procedure. You may notice pressure or some pushing, though. Weird feeling, yes. Pain, no.

If the tooth has already come through, removal can be fairly straightforward. A tooth that’s partly covered by gum or sitting at an angle takes more work because the dentist may need to make a small opening around it.

Recovery After One Wisdom Tooth

Having only one tooth removed means you’re dealing with one healing area, which is a big advantage. Your cheek can still swell. Your jaw may feel stiff. The first couple of days are usually the annoying bit.

A Few Things Worth Remembering

• Rest on the day of removal. You don’t need to turn recovery into a productivity challenge.

• Skip smoking because it raises the risk of problems with healing.

• Keep the area clean, but be gentle around the extraction site. Scrubbing it like a normal tooth is a terrible idea.

One-side wisdom tooth removal works especially well when a single tooth is causing the issue and the others are healthy. There’s no prize for removing all four just because they happen to exist.
