Removing Wisdom Teeth on Both Sides

2 min read

Why Remove Both Sides Together?

Wisdom teeth don’t always grow neatly into place. One might come in sideways. Another may stay partly trapped under the gum. When problems are happening on both sides, treating them together means you only have one main recovery period to deal with.

Your Dentist Will Check the Teeth First

• Both sides causing pain or repeated swelling? That’s a pretty strong reason to discuss removing them together.

• One tooth may be straightforward while the other needs a more involved extraction, so don’t assume both sides will feel identical afterward.

• A badly angled tooth deserves extra attention, especially when it keeps trapping food around the gum.

What Recovery Feels Like

The first couple of days are usually the annoying part. Your mouth may feel swollen and tender, and chewing takes some planning because you’ve had work done on both sides.

So, soft food becomes your friend. Cold or cool foods often feel soothing at first, while very hot foods are best avoided during the early stage. Your dentist will give you specific instructions based on how the extractions went.

Is Doing Both Sides at Once Better?

But there is a trade-off. The first few days may feel more inconvenient because both sides are healing at once. If one tooth is healthy and unlikely to cause trouble, removing it simply because you’re already there isn’t necessarily the best choice.

• Plan for a quiet couple of days afterward. Your mouth will appreciate the break.

• Follow the aftercare instructions closely, particularly during the first day when the extraction sites are settling.

When Should You Ask About Both?

If your upper or lower wisdom teeth are repeatedly painful, difficult to clean, or causing gum problems, ask whether treating both sides together makes sense. Your dentist can judge the risks after examining the teeth and their roots.

And if you’re nervous about having two sides done at once, say so. That’s a completely reasonable conversation to have before the chair reclines.
