Why Are My Teeth Yellow?

2 min read

Your Teeth May Be Naturally Yellow

This is the part people often miss. Teeth aren’t supposed to look like printer paper.

Enamel is partly see-through, so the warmer color underneath can affect the shade you see. And as you get older, enamel naturally becomes thinner and more transparent. Your smile can therefore look more yellow even if your brushing habits haven’t changed at all.

Genetics matter too. Some people simply start with lighter-looking teeth. Others have a naturally warmer shade. Neither one means you’re doing something wrong.

Surface Stains Are Different

Then there are stains sitting on the outside of the tooth. This is where your daily habits start to matter more.

• Smoking is another big one. The stains can build up gradually, so you may barely notice the change until one day you really do.

• Poor plaque control can make teeth look duller too, although yellowing isn’t always a sign that you’re neglecting your mouth.

Sometimes Enamel Is the Reason

Acid can wear away enamel. And once enamel is lost, your body doesn’t simply grow it back.

Frequent exposure to acidic drinks can contribute to enamel erosion. As the protective enamel gets thinner, the yellower dentin underneath becomes easier to see. So sometimes the answer isn’t “I have more stains.” It’s “I’m seeing more of what’s underneath.”

That’s also why aggressively scrubbing your teeth isn’t a clever shortcut. You want to remove surface buildup without wearing away the thing that gives your teeth their lighter appearance.

What About Whitening Toothpaste?

Charcoal and acidic DIY methods sound harmless because they’re sitting in your kitchen, but that doesn’t make them good for enamel. Some abrasive methods can actually wear the surface and make yellow dentin more visible.
