Why Do Teeth Become Stained?

1 min read

The Everyday Stuff That Leaves a Mark

A lot of stains come from what touches your teeth over and over. Coffee is a big one. Tea can be stubborn too. And dark drinks tend to leave color behind when you’re having them regularly.

Surface Stains vs. Deeper Stains

Deeper stains are different. They develop inside the tooth rather than simply sitting on top, so brushing harder won’t fix the problem. And please don’t try.

Age Changes Things Too

Remember how bright your teeth looked when you were younger? There was more enamel then, and it was usually thicker. As the years pass, enamel naturally wears down. The yellowish dentin underneath becomes easier to see.

Your Mouth Has Its Own History

Some people simply stain more easily than others. Tooth shape matters. Enamel thickness matters.

What Actually Helps?

• A professional cleaning is often the quickest win for surface stains, especially when buildup has been sitting there for a while.

• Whitening works best when the discoloration comes from the outer tooth surface, though deeper stains need a different approach.

• Toothpaste can remove some surface staining, but whitening toothpaste isn’t magic. It won’t change the natural color of the tooth underneath.
