Toothache pain has a habit of showing up when you’re trying to sleep.. Once it starts ignoring it usually makes the night worse. You can ease the pain for a while at home. The real solution depends on what is causing it.
Start With Simple Pain Relief
A compress against your cheek is a good first step. Wrap an ice pack in a cloth. Hold it against the sore area for about 15 to 20 minutes. The cold can reduce swelling. Make the pain feel less strong.
Over-the-counter pain relief can also take the edge off. Ibuprofen is often useful for pain because it reduces inflammation as well as pain. Paracetamol is another choice if you can’t take ibuprofen. Follow the packet instructions. Don’t take more than the recommended amount.
Don’t put aspirin directly on your tooth or gum. It can hurt the tissue. Leave you with another problem to deal with.
Give Your Mouth a Break
Rinse gently with salt water. It can calm gums and wash away bits of food that are stuck around the painful tooth.
For the day or so stick with food that doesn’t make the tooth work too hard. Also avoid hot or cold drinks if they cause a sharp response. Sometimes just getting out of the pain cycle feels surprisingly quick.
Work Out Whats Causing It
Toothache isn’t one problem. A cavity might be irritating the inside of the tooth. A cracked tooth can hurt when you bite. Gum infection can cause tenderness. Swelling around the tooth.. Sometimes the pain comes from an abscess, which needs dental treatment rather than another night of home remedies.
• Pain when biting down especially if it feels like the tooth is taking all the pressure.
• A throbbing that keeps coming back even after pain medicine has worn off.
• Swelling around the tooth or cheek. That’s a reason to stop waiting it out.
• Sensitivity to cold that lasts of going away quickly.
• A taste or fluid around the tooth, which deserves proper attention rather than another DIY experiment.
When You Need a Dentist
If the toothache lasts than a day or two go to a dentist. Painkillers can make you feel better. They don’t fix decay or remove an infection.. Honestly waiting until the pain becomes unbearable usually makes the whole thing more stressful.
Get urgent dental help if you have big swelling, fever, trouble swallowing or swelling around the eye or neck. Those symptoms can show an infection that needs treatment.
Antibiotics aren’t a fix for toothache either. A dentist needs to deal with the source of the problem, which could mean treating decay fixing a damaged tooth or draining an infection.
So How Do You Stop Toothache Pain?
For tonight focus on reducing the pain and protecting the tooth. Use pain relief try a cold compress rinse gently with warm salt water and avoid whatever food or drink causes it.
