How Do I Get Rid of Bad Breath?

3 min read

Bad breath is usually easier to fix than people think. The first place to look is your mouth, your tongue. Bacteria collect there. Produce the smell you notice when you talk or breathe out.

Start with the basics. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean your tongue gently. Floss a day too because food and plaque stuck between your teeth can keep the smell hanging around.

Clean Your Tongue Properly

Your tongue has a surface so bacteria can settle into it quite easily. A tongue scraper works here. Move it gently from the back toward the front then rinse it. Don’t scrub hard. Your tongue isn’t a kitchen counter.

Don’t Forget Between Your Teeth

Brushing misses the spaces between teeth. Flossing gets into those areas. Removes the stuff that starts smelling after sitting there for a while. If your gums bleed every time you floss don’t simply stop. Keep cleaning and speak to your dentist if the bleeding continues.

Mouthwash can freshen your breath. I’d treat it as an extra rather than the main fix. A strong minty taste can make you feel like the problem has disappeared while the actual cause is still sitting underneath it.

Keep Your Mouth From Getting Dry

Dry mouth is an one. Saliva naturally helps food and bacteria from your mouth so a dry mouth often means stronger breath.

• Sip water regularly after waking up or during a long workday.

• Sugar-free chewing gum is handy after meals because chewing gets saliva moving

• Sleeping with your mouth open? That morning smell may have more to do with dryness than you think.

Also watch how often you rely on snacks or drinks. They leave bacteria with plenty to work with particularly when you’re grazing throughout the day of giving your mouth a break.

Look for the Reason It Keeps Coming

Sometimes bad breath sticks around despite decent brushing. Gum disease is one reason. Cavities can also trap food and bacteria. An infected tooth can produce an unpleasant smell and you’ll usually need dental treatment rather than another bottle of mouthwash.

When Bad Breath Needs a Dentist

If the smell doesn’t improve after you’ve cleaned your teeth and tongue properly for a couple of weeks get it checked. Persistent bad breath deserves a look rather than endless attempts to cover it up.

If you have swollen or bleeding gums, tooth pain, loose teeth or a bad taste that won’t go away don’t keep waiting for it to sort itself out. Those signs can point to a problem that needs treatment.
