What Is Fluoride?

2 min read

Fluoride’s a naturally occurring mineral, shows up in tiny amounts in water, soil, rocks, even some foods. Body doesn’t need much of it, but your teeth genuinely benefit from regular exposure to it.

How It Protects Your Teeth

Enamel’s hard but not invincible. Every time bacteria break down sugar in your mouth, they produce acid that pulls minerals out of the enamel. That’s demineralisation. Keep that happening without enough repair and eventually you get a cavity.

Fluoride helps push things the other way. Supports remineralisation, basically putting minerals back into enamel that’s gotten weak. Makes it more resistant to acid too. Small thing, matters a lot.

Fluoride And Your Toothpaste

This is why fluoride toothpaste gets recommended so much. Brush with it, leave a thin layer around your teeth, it does its job from there. Don’t need to scrub harder or use a ton of it either, more isn’t better here.

Regular fluoride toothpaste is enough for most people. Brushing properly twice a day beats some expensive toothpaste with ten claims printed on the box.

Where You Actually Get Fluoride From

Usually just everyday stuff, not some special treatment. Fluoridated tap water where that’s a thing locally. Toothpaste, obviously. Some dental products carry higher fluoride levels for people who need extra protection.

Occurs naturally in some water sources too, varies a lot depending on where it comes from.

Is It Actually Safe

Yeah, at the right amounts. That’s the key part, amount. Too much, especially while teeth are still developing, can cause fluorosis, usually just faint white marks on the teeth.

Worth watching a bit closer with young kids since they tend to swallow toothpaste instead of spitting it out. Use the amount recommended for their age, get them into the habit of spitting after brushing.

Why Your Dentist Keeps Bringing It Up

Might come up if your teeth show early signs of decay, or if you’re generally prone to cavities. Sometimes it’s just a quick fluoride varnish during a regular visit, takes barely any time.
