dental hygiene
Not everyone has wisdom teeth. Some people never develop them at all, and honestly, that can be a nice bit of luck. Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to appear at the very back of your mouth, usually sometime during the late teens or early twenties.
Most people have up to four. But having fewer is completely normal. Some people develop only one or two. Others have three. And some have none.
Why Do Some People Have No Wisdom Teeth?
Genetics plays a big part here. If your parents didn’t develop wisdom teeth, there’s a decent chance you won’t either, although there’s no guarantee. Your jaw size and how your teeth develop also matter.
You Might Have Them Without Knowing It
• No wisdom teeth at all. Yep, some people simply never form them.
• One or two instead of four is perfectly possible, though your dentist may want to check their position.
• Hidden under the gum, which is where an X-ray becomes much more useful than guessing from what you can see.
Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Not automatically. This is one dental decision where removing something simply because it exists doesn’t make much sense.
So, Is Having No Wisdom Teeth Better?
From a practical point of view, I’d take the no-wisdom-teeth option. There are fewer teeth hiding at the back of your mouth, which means fewer awkward corners to clean and fewer chances of an impacted tooth becoming a nuisance.
Still, having wisdom teeth isn’t automatically bad. Plenty of people have them and never need treatment.
