Why Some People Don’t Have Them
Genetics plays a big role here. If your parents didn’t develop wisdom teeth, there’s a decent chance you won’t either. Researchers also believe changes in jaw size and human evolution have influenced how often these teeth develop.
You Can Have Fewer Than Four
Four wisdom teeth is common, but it’s hardly a rule. You might have one. You might have two. You could have three sitting quietly in there.
• Zero wisdom teeth. Completely normal, and honestly, your dentist probably won’t complain.
• One or two can happen, even when the rest of your teeth look perfectly ordinary.
• All four developed? That doesn’t automatically mean they’ll need to come out, which is where people sometimes get unnecessarily worried.
What If You Have Them but Can’t See Them?
This is where things get a little confusing. A wisdom tooth doesn’t need to be visible to exist. It can remain trapped under your gum or stuck against another tooth, which is known as an impacted wisdom tooth.
Do Hidden Wisdom Teeth Need Removal?
• Pain at the very back of your jaw deserves attention, especially if it keeps coming back.
• Swelling around a partly erupted tooth isn’t something to simply ignore, though it may settle temporarily.
So, Is It Better Not to Have Wisdom Teeth?
I think so. If you never develop them, you’ve skipped one of those dental complications people spend far too much time worrying about. There’s no prize for having four.
Still, having wisdom teeth doesn’t mean you’ll have problems. Plenty of people keep theirs without needing removal. The important part is knowing what they’re doing in your mouth, rather than assuming every wisdom tooth is destined for surgery.
