Will Everyone Have Wisdom Teeth?

2 min read

No. Not everyone will have wisdom teeth, and that’s completely normal. Some people never develop them at all, while others grow one, two, three, or the full set of four. Your mouth doesn’t follow a strict rulebook here.

Why Some People Don’t Have Them

The simple answer is genetics. Your genes influence whether wisdom teeth develop in the first place, so having no wisdom teeth doesn’t mean something went wrong. Your family history can offer a clue, although it can’t predict exactly what will happen to you.

What If Only One Wisdom Tooth Grows?

That’s normal too. You don’t need to get all four. One person might have a wisdom tooth on the upper right side, while another develops teeth on both sides of the lower jaw.

• One tooth only, which feels a little random but isn’t unusual.

• Two or three wisdom teeth can develop, even when the fourth never forms.

• All four are possible, though having the full set doesn’t mean they’ll all come through neatly.

So, Should You Worry If You Don’t Have Wisdom Teeth?

Honestly, no. Having no wisdom teeth is usually nothing to worry about. Plenty of healthy adults never develop them, and they get along perfectly well without that final set of molars.

And if you do have them, don’t panic either. They aren’t automatically a problem. Your dentist can check their position and decide whether they’re worth keeping or removing.

Maybe the best part is that your mouth gets to make this decision without asking your permission. Funny little pieces of biology.
