What You Can Do at Home
A cold compress against the outside of your cheek is one of the better short-term options, especially if the area feels swollen. Wrap ice in a cloth and hold it there for about 15 minutes. Then give your skin a break.
A Few Things to Avoid
• Very hot or very cold food, especially if the tooth is already sensitive, tends to make the ache shout louder.
• Hard foods are a bad match for a painful tooth, so give yourself an easier meal for now.
Why the Pain Keeps Coming Back
If the toothache keeps returning after pain relief wears off, there’s usually a reason. A cavity may have reached deeper into the tooth. The gum around it could be infected. Sometimes a cracked tooth is responsible, and you won’t always be able to see the crack yourself.
That’s why painkillers are a temporary fix. They turn down the alarm. They don’t repair the thing setting it off.
Raj had a tooth that started hurting whenever he drank cold water. He kept moving the same glass around his mouth to avoid that side, which honestly became a strange little breakfast routine.
Can You Stop Toothache Permanently
Focus on keeping the area clean, using a cold compress, and taking suitable pain relief as directed. Then get the tooth checked if the pain doesn’t settle.
Because a toothache that’s quiet after a tablet isn’t necessarily a healthy tooth. It may simply be a tooth that has stopped complaining for a few hours. And isn’t that usually when people decide to ignore it?
