dental hygiene
A dry throat can feel really annoying. You. It feels scratchy. You keep reaching for water. The dryness comes back twenty minutes later.
Usually the reason is simple. You haven’t had fluids. You’ve been breathing through your mouth. The air around you is dry. Sometimes you’ve just talked for hours without giving your throat a break.
What Can Make Your Throat Feel Dry?
Dehydration is one of the things to think about. If you haven’t been drinking much during the day your mouth makes saliva and your throat can start feeling rough. Hot weather makes this easier to notice especially if you’re sweating more than usual.
How you breathe matters too. A stuffy nose can force you to breathe through your mouth while you sleep, which explains why you wake up feeling like you’ve swallowed a handful of sand.
Sleeping with your mouth open is a cause. So is having a fan or air conditioner blowing at your face all night. The cool air feels good at first. Your throat might not feel the same by morning.
Could It Be Something You Ate Or Drank?
Yes. Alcohol and drinks with caffeine can make you feel more dehydrated especially if you’re already not drinking water. Spicy foods can also bother a throat thats already dry.
Smoking is another problem.. If you’re around smoke often your throat doesn’t get much chance to feel better.
Dry Throat From A Cold Or Allergy
Sometimes the dryness is part of something. A cold can cause stuffiness, which makes you breathe through your mouth. Allergies can do the same when your nose is blocked.
Postnasal drip can also make your throat feel irritated. You might find yourself clearing your throat often especially when lying down.
Medicines Can Play A Part
Some medicines saliva production. That includes allergy medicines and drugs for congestion. If your dry throat started after taking a medicine check the information leaflet or ask a pharmacist instead of just stopping it.
When Should You Get It Checked?
A dry throat that lasts a time usually isn’t a big problem. Drink water regularly. Give your throat a chance to feel better.
Still if the dryness keeps happening it’s worth looking into especially if you also have trouble swallowing or breathing. A sore throat that doesn’t go away should be checked too.
• Your mouth feels dry all day long.
• Night-time mouth breathing is probably. A stuffy nose is often the sign.
• You have thirst that doesn’t match how much you’re drinking. It’s worth talking to a doctor about.
• The dryness comes back for weeks even after you’ve changed your habits.
Don’t ignore serious breathing trouble or trouble swallowing. Those symptoms need medical help.
