dental hygiene
You brush your teeth rinse your mouth and still your breath smells. Bad breath can be annoying. The cause is often inside the mouth not the teeth.
Bacteria live naturally in the mouth. When they break down food particles and other material around teeth or tongue they release smelling compounds. If those bacteria build up near the back of the tongue you can still smell bad breath soon after brushing.
Your tongue might be the culprit.
Most people look at teeth. Forget the tongue. The tongue has a surface with tiny spaces where bacteria and food debris can collect. That coating can smell quite unpleasant.
So gently cleaning the tongue once a day is worth it. A tongue scraper works well. A toothbrush can also clean the tongue. Do not scrub aggressively. The tongue is not a kitchen counter.
Dry mouth makes bad breath worse.
Do you notice bad breath smells worse after waking up? That is partly because saliva production drops while you sleep. Saliva normally washes away debris. Keeps the mouth from getting too dry.
Mouth breathing, dehydration, certain medicines and smoking can also dry the mouth. When the mouth is dry bacteria that produce odor have a time staying.
Sometimes bad breath comes from gums or teeth.
Persistent bad breath needs a look if it does not improve with regular brushing and cleaning. Gum disease is one reason. Inflamed or bleeding gums can create an environment where bacteria thrive and pockets around gums can hold debris that you cannot clean easily.
Cavities can also cause breath especially when food gets trapped inside a damaged tooth. An old filling that does not seal properly can also do the same.
What you can do today
• Clean your tongue gently at the back where the coating tends to collect.
• Floss properly because food stuck between two teeth can start smelling before you notice anything
• Drink water throughout the day. Dry mouth makes bad breath almost impossible to change.
• Mouthwash can freshen,. Relying on it alone is not a good plan. I would fix the cause of the breath instead.
When bad breath keeps coming
If bad breath continues for a couple of weeks despite good oral care book a dental appointment. You may have gum disease, tooth decay or another dental problem that needs treatment of another mint.
Sometimes the source is not, in the mouth. Certain stomach or throat conditions can cause bad breath although dental causes are much more common.
