Why Do My Teeth Ache?

Why Do My Teeth Keep Aching?

Toothache sneaks up on you. Starts as a dull thing when you bite into something, then randomly shows up again while you’re just sitting there doing nothing. And once you notice it, you can’t stop poking it with your tongue.

Might Be a Cavity

First thing worth considering. Decay works through the enamel, gets deeper, and the inside of the tooth gets a lot more sensitive. Sharp pain with cold or sweet stuff, sometimes a dull ache that lingers after.

The hole isn’t always visible either, so don’t wait around for a dark spot to show up in the mirror. Your dentist can catch decay way before you’d ever see it yourself.

Could Be the Nerve

If hot or cold food leaves an ache that hangs around longer than it should, that’s usually the nerve getting irritated. Deep decay causes this a lot. So can a cracked tooth, especially if biting down gives you a sudden jolt out of nowhere.

Pain that keeps coming back matters more than pain that happened once after biting something hard.

Your Gums Might Be Behind It

Sometimes the tooth’s innocent and the gum next to it is the actual problem. Gum disease makes things sore and swollen, and an infection nearby can create a deep throbbing kind of pressure that feels like it’s coming from the tooth.

One spot feeling tender while brushing, or the gum just looking different than usual, easy to ignore until it isn’t anymore.

Could Be Grinding

Wake up with sore teeth or a tired jaw? Might be grinding at night. You wouldn’t even know since you’re asleep for it.

A friend of mine figured this out after noticing his teeth hurt worst on Monday mornings, plus a tight jaw after late nights on his laptop. Turned out he was grinding without realizing it.

What To Actually Do

Cold drinks triggering pain that sticks around, get that checked. Pain specifically when biting down usually points to a crack or something deeper. Swelling near the tooth, especially if it’s warm or getting more tender, that’s more serious. A dull ache that keeps returning isn’t something to brush off just because it’s tolerable. And if there’s severe pain with facial swelling or you’re feeling unwell overall, don’t wait, get urgent care.

While you’re waiting on an appointment, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Over the counter pain relief helps in the meantime if it’s safe for you to take.
