Why Do My Jaws Ache?

3 min read

Why Your Jaw Keeps Hurting

Jaw pain has a funny way of showing up when you least expect it. Wake up sore, or chewing suddenly feels like effort. Sometimes the ache sits near your ear and you’re not even sure the jaw’s the actual problem.

Usually there’s a reason though. Clenching your teeth without noticing, especially on stressful days or while you sleep. Jaw muscles work hard just from chewing, and constant tension catches up with them eventually.

Your Teeth Might Be Part Of It

A tooth problem can make your jaw ache too. Deep cavity, an infection, either one puts pressure around the tooth and that pain spreads into nearby areas. Notice it more biting down, or with something very hot or cold.

Ache that keeps coming back is worth getting checked. Tooth pain doesn’t always stay put where it started, and waiting for it to get unbearable isn’t much of a strategy.

Grinding Wears Your Jaw Out

Grinding or clenching’s another big one, and you might not even realize you’re doing it since it usually happens asleep. Wake up and your jaw feels stiff, heavy, almost like you’ve been chewing all night.

TMJ Can Cause More Than Just An Ache

The joints sit on both sides of your face, right in front of your ears, letting your jaw open, close, move side to side. Get those joints or the muscles around them irritated and you’re looking at aching, stiffness, pain while chewing.

Pay Attention To The Small Signs

Clicking on its own usually isn’t a big deal. Pain, locking, trouble opening your mouth though, that’s different. Might also notice things get worse after chewy food or a long day of talking.

Clicking without pain isn’t the part worth worrying about first. A jaw that locks or won’t open properly needs an actual dental assessment, not more internet searching. Headaches around the temples sometimes tag along with jaw tension too, annoying since the jaw isn’t the obvious first suspect.

When It’s Worth Getting Checked

Mild ache after a long chewing day usually settles with rest. Give it a break, soft food for a bit if that helps.

Don’t brush off pain that’s severe or getting worse though. See a dentist if it lasts, keeps returning, or shows up with swelling. And major facial swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, that’s urgent, get help right away.

Your jaw shouldn’t hurt every day. If it does, there’s usually something behind it. Maybe the teeth. Maybe clenching. Maybe the joint itself needs attention.
