Why Are My Bottom Teeth Yellow?

1 min read

Your Lower Teeth May Just Show More Yellow

Teeth aren’t naturally bright white all the way through. Under the outer enamel is dentin, which has a warmer yellow color. As enamel gets thinner with age, that color becomes easier to see.

Buildup Makes a Big Difference

Plaque is soft at first. Leave it sitting around the gumline, though, and it can harden into tartar. That rough surface then holds onto stains more easily, so the yellow area becomes much more obvious.

A professional dental cleaning is the fix when tartar is the problem. Whitening toothpaste won’t scrape hardened tartar away. Honestly, expecting it to is a bit like trying to clean dried paint with a wet tissue.

Stains Can Settle There Too

Surface stains are another possibility. Dark drinks can leave marks over time. Smoking does too.

When Yellow Teeth Need a Closer Look

• A rough yellow patch near the gumline, especially if it doesn’t brush away.

• Sensitivity or pain alongside the color change. Don’t keep whitening over that and hope it disappears.

• Bleeding gums around the yellow area. That’s worth getting checked rather than simply scrubbing harder.
