What’s Good for Toothache?

2 min read

A toothache can turn a day into a constant annoyance. You might be able to ignore toothache for ten minutes then toothache starts pulsing and suddenly that cup of tea does not seem worth touching.

Things That Can Calm a Toothache

Cold is useful when toothache comes with swelling. Hold a pack against the outside of your cheek for about fifteen minutes then give your skin a break. Do not press ice directly against your tooth because that can make sensitivity feel much worse.

An over-the-counter painkiller can also take the edge off toothache. Ibuprofen is commonly used for pain when it is safe for you to take it. Paracetamol is another option. Follow the package directions. Do not take more than the recommended amount.

What You Put in Your Mouth Matters

• Warm salt water is sometimes the rinse that feels best.

• A cold pack against your cheek can settle swelling although you will want a cloth between the pack and your skin.

• Pain relief medicine, if you normally take pain relief medicine safely and follow the dose on the label.

• Something soft to eat. Crunchy snacks can wait.

Don’t Try to Fix It With Random Home Remedies

putting aspirin directly on a painful tooth is a bad idea for toothache. Aspirin can. Burn the gum tissue instead of fixing the problem.

The same goes for rubbing with strong substances. Toothache is not something you want to attack with whatever happens to be sitting in the kitchen cupboard. A little relief is useful. A chemical burn on top of toothache is not.

When a Toothache Needs a Dentist

Here’s the thing. Home care can settle the pain. It does not remove the cause of toothache. A cavity can keep getting deeper. An infection will not simply disappear because the pain of toothache stopped for a hours.

Don’t Wait Too Long

See a dentist if toothache lasts than a day or two keeps returning or gets stronger. You should get dental care if there is major swelling, fever, trouble swallowing or difficulty breathing.

If toothache hurts sharply whenever you bite that is worth getting checked too. Something, underneath the surface may be going on even if the tooth looks perfectly normal.
