Start With Simple Relief
A saltwater rinse is one of the easiest things to try. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water swish it around your mouth then spit it out. It can soothe gums and helps keep the area cleaner.
A cold compress is worth trying especially if your face feels swollen. Place it against the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes. Then take a break from the cold. The cold can reduce the pain for a while which honestly feels like a victory when your tooth has been throbbing all morning.
Pain relief medicine can also make a difference. Ibuprofen is often useful for pain because it reduces inflammation as well as pain. Paracetamol is another option. Follow the instructions on the packet. Check with a pharmacist or doctor if you’re unsure what you can safely take.
Be Careful With Home Remedies
Clove oil gets mentioned a lot too. It contains eugenol, which has a numbing effect. Concentrated oil can irritate your mouth if its used incorrectly. I prefer to stick with an option than turn a small toothache into a sore-gum problem.
What You Eat Matters More Than You’d Think
• Warm than very hot food tends to feel much easier on an irritated tooth.
• Avoid sweet things for now especially if the pain feels sharp after eating them.
• Crunchy foods are probably not your friend today. That hard biscuit can wait.
Keep brushing though. Gently. Avoiding the area completely lets plaque build up around the tooth and gums which isn’t going to make things better.
Don’t Ignore Pain That Keeps Coming Back
If the pain lasts than a day or two keeps returning or gets worse see a dentist. You should also get care quickly if theres swelling, fever, a bad taste in your mouth or trouble swallowing.
Severe swelling around the face or neck needs medical attention particularly if breathing becomes difficult.
So What’s Actually Good, for Toothache?
For short-term relief I would start with a saltwater rinse and a cold compress. Use pain relief if you need it and avoid whatever clearly triggers the pain. Simple is better here.
