What Is Root Canal Treatment?

2 min read

A Root Canal Isn’t the Villain Here

The pulp inside your tooth gets infected, the pain shows up, and the root canal is what fixes it. The dentist cleans out the damaged pulp, seals the tooth, and you’re done. That’s the whole story, despite the horror stories.

Why It Happens

A deep cavity reaches the pulp. A crack lets bacteria in. An old filling fails. And waiting it out doesn’t work. The pain might fade when the nerve dies, but the infection stays put.

How You Know

Pain that won’t quit. Hurts when you bite down. Hot or cold drinks causing lingering sensitivity. Sometimes swelling. Sometimes almost nothing, and the dentist finds it on an X-ray.

What Actually Happens

They numb you. No sharp pain, just pressure. The dentist opens the tooth, removes the pulp, cleans it, seals it. You might need a crown after since the tooth gets fragile. Take it easy chewing for a couple of days, keep the area clean, and don’t skip the follow up for the permanent crown.

Does It Hurt?

The procedure, no. Your infected tooth before the appointment? That’s the pain everyone remembers. Afterward there’s some tenderness for a few days. Normal.

Worth It?

Keeping your real tooth beats pulling it and dealing with replacements. A friend of mine put hers off for months, terrified. Whole thing took about an hour. She ate dinner normally that night and couldn’t believe she’d waited.

So if your dentist says you need one, the worst part is the buildup in your head. Trade one appointment for a pain free mouth. Easy call.
