What Helps With Toothache?

2 min read

A cold compress is one of the things to try. Hold it against the outside of your cheek for around 15 minutes then give your skin a break. It can reduce swelling and numb the area a little, which feels surprisingly good when the tooth is throbbing.

Things You Can Try at Home

Rinsing your mouth with salt water is another simple option. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth. Spit it out than swallowing it. This can clean around a tooth and soothe the surrounding gums.

Pain Relief That Actually Makes Sense

• A cold pack against your cheek can take the edge off especially when the pain comes with swelling.

• Warm salt water is gentle and easy. It works well when your gums around the tooth feel irritated.

• Pain medicine, taken exactly as directed on the packet gives relief. It will not repair a damaged tooth though.

Why the Tooth Still Hurts

The part is that toothache usually has a reason behind it. A cavity may have reached deeper into the tooth. Sometimes the gum is inflamed. A cracked tooth can hurt when you bite down and an infection may cause pain along with swelling.

So home treatment should be viewed as a short‑term fix, not the finish line. If the pain keeps returning after the medicine wears off something, underneath needs attention.

When a Toothache Needs a Dentist

You should seek dental care if you develop significant swelling around your face or jaw. Fever can also point to an infection.. If swelling makes it difficult to breathe or swallow get emergency medical help immediately.

Toothache that lasts than a day or two deserves attention especially if you are relying on pain medicine just to get through normal activities. You do not want to spend a week reopening the medicine packet every few hours while the actual problem quietly gets worse.
