Your teeth aren’t supposed to have random white spots that look dull compared with the surrounding enamel. One reason is that early tooth decay can pull minerals from the enamel, leaving a pale area behind. It may feel completely normal at this stage.
What a More Advanced Cavity Looks Like
Once decay has moved further into the tooth, the change is usually easier to notice. There may be a visible hole or pit. The edge can look rough. Food may keep getting stuck in the same annoying little place.
Not Every Cavity Looks Dark
This is worth knowing because the old idea that every cavity is black isn’t very helpful. Some cavities are pale. Others are brown.
What If You Think You Have One?
Don’t poke at the spot with a pin or anything sharp. That won’t tell you what’s happening, and you could damage the tooth or your gums.
