What Causes Dry Cotton Mouth?

2 min read

Cotton Mouth Means Something

That sticky feeling where your tongue drags across your teeth and swallowing feels like work. Dry mouth, xerostomia, whatever you call it. Saliva dropped and your mouth noticed.

The Usual Reasons

Not enough water. Sweating, busy day, forgot to drink.
Sleeping with your mouth open. Blocked nose forces it, and moving air dries everything out overnight.

Stress. That dry feeling before a presentation is real, not imagined.
Coffee, smoking, alcohol. All dry you out, especially without water alongside.

Check Your Meds

A lot of pills reduce saliva as a side effect. Allergy meds, blood pressure stuff, antidepressants. If the dryness started after a new prescription, there’s your clue. Don’t stop the pill yourself, just ask your doctor.

When It’s More Than Habits

Water doesn’t fix it and it lasts for weeks? Something deeper might be going on. Some conditions affect saliva production directly.

Watch for a sticky tongue that won’t quit, trouble talking, more cavities than usual, or a sore burning mouth. Those signs mean stop guessing and go get checked.

What Helps Fast

Sip water through the day. Sugar free gum gets saliva moving quickly, faster than any drink. A humidifier at night if you wake up dry.

And brush and floss like you mean it. Less saliva means your teeth lost their bodyguard.

Don’t Just Accept It

Weeks of dryness, sores, trouble swallowing? Dentist or doctor. This isn’t something you power through.

Why spend every morning wondering why your tongue feels like sandpaper?
