How to Treat Dry Socket?

2 min read

Dry socket is one of those dental problems that tends to make you think something has gone seriously wrong. The pain often gets worse a few days after a tooth is removed instead of settling down. It can spread toward your ear or jaw. Not pleasant.

Get the Socket Checked

If you think you have dry socket, call your dentist. Don’t try to dig around the extraction site or rinse it aggressively to see what’s happening. The blood clot that normally protects the area has been lost or broken down, leaving sensitive tissue underneath exposed.

What Your Dentist Does

Treatment usually starts with gently cleaning the socket. This removes trapped food or debris without disturbing the area more than necessary. Your dentist may then place a medicated dressing into the socket to cover the exposed area and reduce pain.

Managing the Pain at Home

• Pain relief, taken exactly as directed, usually makes the waiting period much easier. Don’t exceed the recommended dose because the pain is annoying.

• Keep food away from the socket as much as you reasonably can. Soft foods are easier for a few days, especially when chewing near the extraction site feels uncomfortable.

• No smoking. Honestly, this is the one I’d take seriously because smoking interferes with healing and raises the chance of problems after an extraction.

Give the Area Time to Heal

Dry socket doesn’t usually mean the whole extraction has failed. The area can still heal normally after treatment, but it won’t happen overnight.

When Pain Needs Another Check

If the pain isn’t improving after treatment, contact your dentist again. The same goes for pain that suddenly becomes much worse, swelling that keeps increasing, fever, or a bad taste or smell that doesn’t settle.

And don’t assume you need to tough it out. Dry socket hurts enough already. Getting the socket treated properly is usually a much better option than spending several days trying random home remedies and hoping they’ll work.
