dental hygiene
A receding gum line usually doesn’t grow back on its own. That sounds worrying. Don’t panic. The useful part is that you can often stop it from getting worse and protect the exposed tooth.
Start by Finding the Cause
Before trying anything at home get the gum checked by a dentist. Recession happens for reasons and treatment depends on what is irritating the gum in the first place.
Brushing hard is a common culprit. So is using a bristled toothbrush. Gum disease can also damage the tissue around your teeth while grinding can put pressure on already sensitive areas.
A dentist will look at how much gum has receded and check whether there is inflammation or bone loss underneath. That part matters. You don’t want to treat the gum line while ignoring what is causing it.
Change How You Brush
Switch to a bristled toothbrush and use gentle pressure. You don’t need to scrub your teeth until they squeak. Honestly aggressive brushing isn’t a badge of dental hygiene.
Hold the brush at an angle near the gum line. Make small movements. An electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor is worth considering if you tend to brush like you’re cleaning a pan.
Floss too. Snapping floss into the gums can irritate them especially if they’re already tender.
Treat Gum Disease Early
• Bleeding gums aren’t something to ignore especially when it keeps happening after brushing.
• A soft toothbrush feels gentler. It still cleans properly when you use it with steady pressure.
• If a tooth feels sensitive after recession a toothpaste made for teeth can take the edge off. Give it some time.
What About Home Remedies?
Salt-water rinses can soothe gums but they won’t rebuild lost gum tissue. The same goes for oil pulling. It might make your mouth feel cleaner. It isn’t a treatment for gum recession.
Skip DIY scraping. Trying to remove tartar with tools can injure the gum and make the problem worse.
When Gum Surgery Is Needed
If the recession is significant or the tooth root is badly exposed a dentist may suggest a gum graft. During the procedure tissue is placed over the exposed area to improve coverage and protect the root.
It sounds more dramatic than the conversation usually is. The goal is straightforward. Cover root surfaces and create healthier gum support.
Don’t Wait for Pain
Gum recession doesn’t always hurt. That’s what makes it easy to ignore. You may notice sensitivity when drinking something or you might simply see more of the tooth than before.
Once the gum has pulled away waiting for it to fix itself isn’t a great plan. Get it examined early. Sometimes a small change, in brushing is all thats needed. Sometimes the gum needs treatment.
