How to Stop Toothache?

2 min read

A toothache has a way of taking over your whole day. You try to focus on work. You chew on the other side. Then you catch yourself touching the sore spot again because your brain keeps checking if it still hurts. It does.

Start With the Simple Things

The first move is surprisingly boring. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Food sometimes gets trapped around a sore tooth and that little rinse can make the pain settle down faster than people expect. Don’t use water that’s too hot. Your tooth already has enough going on.

If your cheek looks swollen, hold a cold pack against the outside of your face for about fifteen minutes. Give it a break before doing it again. Heat feels comforting to some people, but if the pain comes from swelling, I’m firmly on the cold side.

What You Should Avoid

• Cold drinks bothering you? Let them warm up a little first. Tiny changes like that often make eating less frustrating.

• A pain reliever from the pharmacy works if you follow the directions on the label. Don’t place medicine directly on the tooth because that old trick can irritate your gums.

• Sticky sweets are worth skipping for now. You’ll probably miss them for a day. Your tooth won’t.

Figure Out What’s Causing It

Toothaches don’t appear for no reason. A cavity is common. Sometimes it’s an infected tooth. Other times the gum around the tooth is the problem. The pain gives clues, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Know When It Needs a Dentist

Some pain simply isn’t a home problem anymore. If your face starts swelling, if you notice pus, or you develop a fever, book an urgent dental visit. The same goes for pain that hangs around for more than a day or two without easing up. Waiting rarely rewards anyone.

Honestly, people often spend hours searching for another home remedy because it feels easier than making an appointment. I get it. But the tooth doesn’t care how many articles you’ve read. If the nerve inside is infected, it needs proper treatment.

• Sharp pain that shoots through your jaw deserves attention, even if it fades for a while.

• Bleeding gums with a constant ache tell their own story, and they shouldn’t be brushed aside.
