How to Stop Stinky Breath?

How to Actually Fix Bad Breath

Okay so here’s the annoying truth about bad breath: you brush, you rinse, maybe throw in some gum, and somehow an hour later it’s like you did nothing at all. I used to think this was just bad luck. It’s not. It’s bacteria breaking down food in your mouth, and nine times out of ten the tongue is the part nobody bothers with.

The Tongue Thing

I ignored my tongue for years. Big mistake, honestly. It’s rough, food and bacteria get stuck in there, especially toward the back, and your toothbrush just doesn’t get to that spot. Grab a tongue scraper, run it back to front once a day, don’t go at it like you’re scrubbing a pan. A toothbrush works in a pinch too but the scraper’s just easier.

Dry Mouth Is Sneakier Than You’d Think

Saliva is basically doing cleanup duty in your mouth all day, so when it dries out, the smell has nowhere to go. Drink water. Actual water, not just coffee all day. Sugar free gum in between meals helps get saliva going again too. And yeah, that’s exactly why morning breath is the worst version of this problem, you’re just not producing much saliva while you sleep.

If you’re a mouth breather at night, or your nose is stuffed up, that’s probably your actual morning breath culprit. Not last night’s dinner.

Floss, Even Though Nobody Wants To

Your toothbrush flat out cannot reach the gaps between your teeth. Food sits in there. Bacteria show up. Bad smell follows. I know flossing feels tedious but it matters more than people give it credit for. If floss annoys you, try an interdental brush instead. Whatever gets you to actually do it.

When Nothing’s Working

If you’ve got all this down and your breath is still off, stop just throwing mints at it. That’s usually your body telling you something bigger is going on, gum disease, decay, sometimes something that has nothing to do with your mouth at all. A dentist can actually pinpoint it instead of you cycling through mouthwash brands hoping one sticks.
