How to Stop Pain From a Tooth?

3 min read

Starts as a dull ache while you’re working, then cold water hits it and suddenly you’re wide awake. So how do you actually calm this down without making it worse?

Start simple, warm salt water rinse. Clears food from around the sore spot and soothes irritated gums. Don’t go extremely hot though, the tooth’s already unhappy enough.

What Helps At Home

Cold compress on the outside of your cheek if there’s any swelling. Wrap it in a cloth, hold it there about 15 minutes, give your skin a break after.

Pain meds help too. Ibuprofen’s commonly used for dental pain when it’s safe for you, paracetamol works too. Just follow the label, don’t go over the recommended amount.

Give The Tooth A Break

Chew on the other side for now. Very hot or cold food can trigger a sharp jolt if the tooth’s inner layers are exposed. Soft food’s easier while you wait to get it checked.

Why It Keeps Coming Back

This is the part people miss. Home treatment calms the pain, doesn’t remove why it’s hurting in the first place.

Could be a cavity reaching deeper into the tooth, a cracked tooth hurting when you bite, gum disease, or an old filling with a problem underneath. Pay attention to what the pain actually feels like, a quick zing from cold is different from pain that lingers for minutes, and pain specifically when biting is its own clue.

Don’t Wait If It Gets Worse

Lasting more than a day or two, book an appointment instead of just treating symptoms on repeat. Feeling better after medicine doesn’t mean the problem’s gone.

Get care fast if there’s facial swelling, fever, bad taste or pus near the tooth, or trouble swallowing. Those can mean infection. And if swelling’s making it hard to breathe, swallow, or speak, that’s urgent, don’t try to sleep it off.

What Not To Do

Skip extremely hot or cold food for now, that temperature swing can set off another sharp burst of pain. Clove oil gets recommended a lot but concentrated oil directly on the gum can irritate it, a dental check’s the better long term move. Don’t poke at stuck food with random sharp objects, use floss instead.

Sleeping with your head slightly raised can help if it’s throbbing and lying flat makes it worse. And a painkiller quieting things down isn’t a reason to keep putting off the dentist, that quiet period can be misleading.

Fixing The Actual Problem

Fastest way to stop recurring pain is treating what’s causing it. Might need decay removed and a filling, root canal if the pulp’s infected, or a different approach entirely for a badly damaged tooth.

Until then, keep the area clean but gentle, brush normally without scrubbing the sore spot, it doesn’t need extra punishment.
