dental hygiene
Your gums shouldn’t bleed every time you brush. Easy to ignore when nothing actually hurts, but that pink in the sink’s often an early sign plaque’s been irritating the gum tissue.
Good news, gingivitis is usually reversible. Just gotta get the inflammation under control before it progresses into something that permanently damages the tissue and bone holding your teeth in place.
Better Daily Cleaning First
Plaque’s the real troublemaker. Sticky film around your teeth, and left there, the bacteria in it irritate your gums until they get swollen, tender, and bleed easily.
Twice daily brushing, fluoride toothpaste, soft brush, gentle pressure. Scrubbing harder never cleaned anyone’s teeth better, just irritates the gums more.
Clean between teeth once a day too. Floss or an interdental brush, whichever fits your gaps and whichever you’ll actually keep doing.
Don’t Stop Just Because It Bleeds
This trips people up constantly. Floss, see blood, panic a little, quit flossing. But if plaque’s causing the inflammation, leaving it there won’t fix the bleeding, it’ll just keep happening. Keep cleaning gently anyway, as things settle down, the bleeding usually eases up on its own.
Get The Tartar Dealt With
Some plaque hardens into tartar eventually, and once that happens, brushing genuinely can’t touch it. Needs a professional.
Gums bleeding a while now, book a checkup instead of trying yet another toothpaste. Cleaning clears what you can’t reach yourself, and the exam tells you whether it’s just gingivitis or gone a bit deeper. Big difference there, gingivitis is reversible, the deeper stuff needs actual treatment.
What To Actually Change
Twice daily brushing, gentle especially around sore spots. Cleaning between teeth daily. Mouthwash’s an extra, not a substitute, the actual cleaning’s what does the work. Quitting smoking helps a ton if that applies to you. And regular visits, especially if bleeding keeps coming back despite doing everything right at home.
Signs Worth Watching
Swollen gums signal inflammation. Bad breath that won’t quit is another clue. Loose teeth or gums pulling away from your teeth, get those checked promptly, don’t wait around on that one.
When Home Care Just Isn’t Cutting It
Cleaning carefully for weeks and it’s still bleeding regularly, stop buying random products hoping one magically works. Get it examined properly.
A dentist can check for deeper pockets and whether any bone loss has happened. Don’t wait for pain either, gum disease can quietly progress without much discomfort at all, which is exactly why people find out later than they’d like.
