If you can feel a hard patch near your gum line you’re probably dealing with tartar. And if you’ve been wondering how to remove tartar from teeth at home there’s a catch: once plaque hardens into tartar your toothbrush can’t simply scrub it away.
You can control plaque at home. You can also stop tartar from building up quickly.. The hard stuff that’s already stuck to your teeth needs professional cleaning. Trying to scrape it off yourself is an idea.
Why Tartar Won’t Brush Away
Plaque starts out soft. If it stays on your teeth minerals in your saliva can harden it into tartar called dental calculus. Once that happens it bonds firmly to the tooth surface.
Brushing still matters. A lot. It removes the plaque around the tartar and helps prevent more from forming but it won’t break off the hardened deposit.
What You Can Do at Home
The trick is to focus on prevention than trying to become your own dentist with a sharp tool from the bathroom cupboard. Seriously leave the scraping tools alone.
• Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Spend around two minutes each time around the gum line where plaque likes to hide.
• Floss daily even if you’re tempted to skip it because the teeth look clean. Plaque between teeth is easy to miss.
• An electric toothbrush is worth considering particularly if you tend to rush brushing. It feels quicker. Makes consistent brushing a little easier.
• Mouthwash can fit into your routine though it doesn’t magically dissolve existing tartar.
Why Scraping Tartar Yourself Is Risky
You’ll find plenty of videos showing people using metal scalers at home. They make it look ridiculously easy. It isn’t.
A sharp instrument can cut your gums. Scratch the tooth surface if you use it incorrectly. You can also push debris further under the gum line, where it’s harder to deal with.
What About Baking Soda or Vinegar?
Baking soda is often suggested for cleaning teeth. It won’t remove established tartar. Vinegar is a worse idea for regular use because acidic substances can wear away tooth enamel.
Honestly aggressive DIY methods aren’t worth it. Your teeth aren’t a kitchen sink.
When a Dental Cleaning Makes Sense
Professional cleaning is the answer when tartar has already formed. A dental professional uses instruments to remove deposits without relying on you to guess where and how much pressure to use.
So Can You Remove Tartar at Home?
Not safely once it has hardened. You can keep plaque under control at home. Make it much harder for fresh tartar to build up. Existing tartar is different.
The annoying truth is that proper dental cleaning is usually hassle, than trying five internet remedies and hoping one works. Your bathroom mirror probably doesn’t need another experiment.
