How to Remedy Toothache?

3 min read

Tooth pain has a way of taking over everything. You try to work. You try to sleep. Somehow your tongue keeps finding the sore spot every few seconds, even though you know it only makes things feel worse.

Start With What Gives Quick Relief

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water first. It sounds almost too simple. Still, it often settles irritated gums and helps wash away bits of food that got trapped where they shouldn’t be.

A cold pack on the outside of your cheek also works well if your face feels swollen. Keep it there for a short while. Give your skin a break. Then try again later if you still need it.

Pain Medicine Helps, But Don’t Overthink It

If you’re able to take over the counter pain medicine safely, use it as directed on the label. Follow the dose. Don’t keep taking more because the pain feels stubborn. That rarely ends well.

One thing I’d skip every single time is putting aspirin directly on the tooth. People still suggest it. I honestly don’t know why because it can irritate the gum and leave you dealing with another problem.

Figure Out What’s Setting It Off

Sometimes the pain shows up only when you drink something cold. Other times chewing is enough to make you stop halfway through lunch. That little pattern matters because it gives your dentist useful clues, even if you can’t tell exactly what’s wrong.

• Warm salt water. Boring advice, sure, though people keep using it because it usually eases irritated tissue.

• If cold drinks trigger the pain, avoid them for now. Your tooth doesn’t need another reason to complain.

• Soft food for a day or two, and you’ll probably notice eating feels less stressful.

• That loose filling you ignored last month deserves attention now. Waiting rarely rewards anyone.

Don’t Ignore Pain That Keeps Coming Back

Toothaches don’t normally disappear forever on their own. The pain may fade for a while because the nerve changes, not because the tooth suddenly fixed itself.

Know When It’s Time to See a Dentist

If your face is swelling or you have a fever, don’t wait around hoping tomorrow feels different. The same goes for pain that wakes you during the night or sticks around for more than a day or two. Your mouth is usually pretty honest when something serious is happening.

Because a toothache is often caused by decay or an infection, home remedies only buy you some breathing room. They don’t remove the actual reason your tooth hurts.
