How to Relieve Toothache?

2 min read

A Toothache Takes Over Everything

Even a small nagging pain makes eating annoying and sleep impossible. The good news is you can calm it down for a while, as long as you don’t make the tooth angrier in the process.

Start With Simple Relief

Warm saltwater rinse. Half a teaspoon in a glass of warm water, swish, spit. Don’t swallow. The warmth soothes and the rinse clears food and debris from around the sore spot.
Cold compress if your cheek feels swollen. Wrap ice in a thin cloth, hold it on for fifteen to twenty minutes, give your skin a break. Repeat as needed.

And skip the aspirin on the tooth trick. Sounds clever, irritates the tissue, leaves you with a second problem. Old remedy, bad idea.

Be Careful With Food

For a day or so, give the tooth an easier job. Very hot food triggers pain. So does ice cold stuff. Sticky sweets are a terrible idea if there’s a cavity involved.
Soft foods while chewing feels like a chore.

Room temperature drinks beat anything steaming or freezing.
Food getting trapped? Gently clean the area. Don’t dig at it with sharp objects.

Use Pain Medicine Right

Ibuprofen is usually the stronger pick for dental pain because it fights inflammation too, if you can take it safely. Paracetamol works otherwise.

Follow the label dose. Don’t take extra because the pain is stubborn. Got a health condition or other meds? Ask a pharmacist first.

Don’t Ignore the Cause

Home treatment is temporary. A toothache almost always has a reason behind it. Decay, a crack, an infection. Painkillers don’t repair any of those.

Pain lasting more than a day or two, coming back, or getting worse? See a dentist. Don’t wait until you’re only chewing on one side.
