How to Relieve Gum Pain?

3 min read

Gum pain has a way of making everything feel harder. Eating feels annoying. Brushing feels like a chore. Even your tongue keeps checking the spot as if that’s somehow going to fix it.

Start with salt water. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water swish it gently around your mouth then spit it out. Do this a times during the day. It’s simple, cheap. Usually feels soothing when your gums are tender.

Start With Gentle Care

Be careful around the area though. Scrubbing harder won’t make sore gums heal faster. In fact aggressive brushing can make the irritation worse especially if the pain started after brushing firmly.

Keep the Area Clean

• Warm salt water is a first move, especially when the gums feel swollen or irritated.

• A soft toothbrush makes brushing less uncomfortable though you’ll still need to clean around the sore area.

• Cold water or a cool compress against the outside of your cheek can take the edge off when the area feels particularly tender.

What Else Can Ease the Pain?

A cold compress can be surprisingly useful. Hold it against the outside of your cheek for periods and give your skin a break between applications. The cold can dull the discomfort. Make the whole area feel less noticeable for a while.

Over-the-counter pain relief is another option if you normally take these medicines safely. Follow the instructions on the package. Don’t put aspirin directly against your gums. That old trick isn’t worth trying because it can irritate the tissue.

Give Your Gums a Break

Try avoiding foods that make the pain flare up. Spicy food can sting. Extremely hot drinks aren’t great when the tissue is already irritated either. Soft cooler foods usually feel easier until things settle down.

Smoking is another one I’d skip while your gums are sore. It can irritate the mouth. Interfere with healing. Honestly giving your gums a couple of days is often more useful than throwing five different home remedies at them.

When Gum Pain Needs a Dentist

Gum pain that keeps coming back deserves attention. It can be linked to gum disease, tooth decay, an infection or something trapped around the tooth. A dentist can find the cause instead of you spending another week trying random fixes.

Get advice promptly if you have significant swelling, pus, a bad taste that won’t go away fever or pain that is getting worse. Trouble swallowing or breathing needs medical attention.
